Discus Classification

Discus fish scientific classification is as follows;

World: Animalia
Branch: Chordata
Class: Actinopterygii
Team: Perciformes
Family: Cichlidae
Genus: Symphysodon

In general, we can classify discus fish in two main title.The First title is Wild Discus and the other is aquarium breeding discus. Wild discus are living in their natural environments. Aquarium breeding discus are consist of many varieties which are made with various of techniques and crossing over.

A-Wild Discus category (Wild type discus)

  1. Heckel (Symphysodon)
    • They have a thick vertical line in the middle of their body.

    • Black vertical bar-shaped lines clearly visible.
    • Ribbon-shaped lines around its body are in min level.

  3. Blue (Haraldi Symphysodon Aequifasciatus)
    • They have clearly visible black vertical bars at their bodies.
    • Their fins and the strips are blue

  4. Green (Symphysodon Aequifasciatus)
    • They have several brown and red spots at the sides of their body
    • They have clearly visible black vertical bars at their bodies.

B-Domestic Discus Category (Aquarium breeding discus)

  1. Striped Turquoise
    • They have blue and red horizontal stripes at their heads fins and bodies.
    • The eyes are red.
  2. Blue Turquoise
    • They have shapes in strip forms at their heads and fins. This shapes are at min. level at their bodies.
    • The eyes are red

  3. Solid Red
    • They have no shape on thier body.
    • 1 main colour or 1 master and 1 side color may occur.
    • Eye iris is red.
  4. Solid (There are other solid Red External)
    • They have no shape on thier body.
    • 1 main colour or 1 master and 1 side color may occur.
    • Eye iris is red.

  5. Fine Patterned
    • They have horizontal short shapes at the side of their bodies in two colors.

  6. Coarse-grained Patterned
    • They have shapes as 'Fine Patterned' but these shapes are bigger.

  7. Spotted
    • The entire body is covered with small dots
    • Eye iris is red or orange color
    • There are no Horizontal stripes towards
  8. Unclassified
    • Do not enter Any class.
    • Unusual shapes
    • Unusual mixed colors
